What is a social educator?

As a social educator, or pedagogue as it  is called in Danish, you work with people who for some reason cannot manage their lives without support. This can be people with a disability, kindergarten children or young people who are looked after by social services.

As a social education student, you will develop your abilities to meet people with respect and empathy, regardless of their situation or behaviour. You will learn how to communicate and cooperate with them and their families, as well as communicating professionally with colleagues and other professionals.

An agent of social change

A social educator is defined as an agent of social change who coordinates social groups through educational strategies that help marginalised people to understand and participate in their social, political, economic and cultural surroundings, and to integrate in society as much as possible.

Social educators work in highly diverse contexts in an endeavour to respond to the need of all collectives of the population to gain access to culture, welfare and participation in society. Their job has two very marked aspects: that of training and welfare, and that of caring for people.

Social educators are responsible for those fields in education that do not have specific regulations, in which they undertake educational intervention actions with marginalised people, people who have social problems or difficulties in adapting to their surroundings.
